::: Editorial Policies and Practices:::
The Experimental and Molecular Medicine (EMM) is owned and published by the Korean Society of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It is published six times a year in a printed version. Its editorial policies are the responsibility of the Editor, the Associate Editors, and the Editorial Board under the general authority of the Publications Committee and the Coun-cil. The EMM publishes papers based on original research that are judged after editorial review to make a sub-stantial con-tribution to the understanding of any area of medical biochemis-try or molecular biology.
Types of papers: Two types of papers may be submitted, full length papers and short communications. Authors are urged to keep the length of papers below eight printed pages (24 typed pages of manuscript in double spacing including figures and tables). Short communications can be no longer than four printed pages. The EMM also publishes Minireviews, but only after invitation by the Editor. Short communications are intended to rapidly communicate novel ideas and results in new and developing areas of biochemistry and molecular medi-cine that are of special interest or wide applicability. They are not designed to be short versions of regular papers. Be-cause of the special nature of short communications, the Edi-tors will try to decide very quickly on their suitability for publi-cation. An Associate Editor decides whether a Communication is suitable for further review.
Language of paper: All manuscripts should be written in English. Authors whose first language is not English are re-quested to have their manuscripts checked carefully for linguis-tic correctness before submission. All manuscripts accepted for publication are checked for English by the professional English Editor in the Korean Society of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Authors are required to pay for the proper fee (average rate is US$50) depending on the number of cor- rections.
Page charges: Basic page charge is US$ 650 (£Ü600,000), which includes the charge for 50 off-prints, for all published manuscripts. For a manuscript over 8 pages, there is an additional charge of US$ 65 (£Ü60,000) per one additional page. Under exceptional circumstances, page charges will be waived if deemed appropriate by the Editorial Board.
Authors unable to pay page charges may apply at the time of submission for a waiver of page charges.
Color charges: Authors will be assessed US$161(£Ü150,000) for each page with color figure(s). Color figures can generally be reproduced in acceptable quality in black and white if authors are unwilling or unable to pay for color charges.
Drawing charges : In case of low resolution images, and figures which do not comply with EMM Guide to Authors for Tables and Figures, additional drawing work is needed. In this case, authors will be charged about US$5.5 (£Ü5,500) for a simple bar or line graph. The drawing fee will be determined according to the difficulty of the job and notified to authors.
Copyright: As a condition of publication, all authors must transfer copyright to the Korean Society of Medical Bioche-mistry and Molecular Biology. Authors should submit Copyright Transfer Agreement at the time of paper submission.
Material transfer: Authors of papers published in the EMM are obligated to honor any reasonable request by qualified in-vestigators for unique propagative materials, such as cell lines, hybridomas, and DNA clones, that are described in the paper.
Review protocol: All manuscripts submitted to the EMM are reviewed critically, and it is the responsibility of the Editor, the Associate Editors, and the Editorial Board to determine their suitability for publication. After receipt of a manuscript by the Editor, it is sent to an Associate Editor who usually assigns it to a member of the Editorial Board. The Board member then makes a definitive recommendation for acceptance, revision, or declination based on the scientific merit and technical quality of the studies reported. Referees may be consulted when additional expertise is required. All Board members and re-ferees who review a manuscript remain unknown to the au-thors. Every manuscript is treated by the reviewers as a privileged communication.
Editorial decisions: The primary criteria for judging the acceptability of a manuscript are its novelty and scientific im-portance. Manuscripts judged by Editorial Board members fulfilling neither of these respects will be declined. Manuscripts of the following types will be declined without full review unless information in the manuscript provides significant biomedical insight: methodology without novel finding obtained using the method; genomic and proteomic analysis without providing novel insight into an underlying mechanism; analysis of genetic polymorphism without providing clues of its sig-nificant linkage with a disease or demonstration of a biochemi-cal process involved.
Duplicate publication: The corresponding author verifies that the manuscript has been approved by all authors, has not been previously reported, and will not be submitted elsewhere while under review by the EMM. If any preliminary or related report other than an abstract of 400 words or fewer has been published or submitted, or is in consideration of publication, a copy must accompany the submission.
Ethics: All human and animal studies must have been approved by the author's institutional review board and the name of the review board should be stated. All clinical investigation must have been conducted according to Declaration of Helsinki principles.
Conflict of interest: All authors are expected to make a formal statement at the time of submission indicating any commercial affiliations as well as consultancies, stock or equity interests, and patent-licensing arrangements that could pose potential conflict of interest regarding the submitted paper. Specifics of such disclosures will remain confidential, although addition of statements regarding the disclosures in the Acknowledgements section may be recommended by the editors, if it is considered appropriate. All funding sources should be credited in the Acknowledgements section.
